CHAPTER SEVEN

CAPRICE swallowed over the huge lump in her throat. She took the child’s hands in hers and held them tight. “Will, thank you for telling me that story…and it’s a really sad story in places, that’s what brought tears to my eyes. But you’re wrong, sweetie, about one thing. Your dad will always love you, no matter how you look or what you wear.”

“But he said he wouldn’t ever like pretty ladies.”

Caprice hesitated, then said softly, “Will, do you think I’m pretty?”

“You are truly pretty. You have the prettiest hair and the prettiest eyes and the prettiest clothes and—”

“I want to tell you a secret. Just a little while ago, when you were doing your piano practice, your dad let me know that he liked me a lot. He even kissed me!”

“He did?”

“He truly did.”

“Wow!” Will mulled this over. “So,” she said at last, “do you think he’d still like me if I put on a pretty dress for the concert?”

“Trust me, your dad loves you because you’re you, and he’d still love you no matter what you wore. Clothes are just like…well, the wrapping on a present. It’s not really important. It’s what’s inside that counts. And that’s what your dad loves about you.”

Will’s expression was doubtful. “You’re sure?”

“I’m sure. Tell you what—how about I meet you right after school tomorrow and we drive to Cedarville and have a look at the dresses. Maybe we can find something you like, and then Mrs. Norton will be happy because you’ll get to be in the concert.”

“Well…” Will chewed her lip, and then she said slowly, “We could look at the dresses…and if we find one that’s not way too beautiful, Dad might not even notice.”

“It’s a deal.” Caprice gave Will a hug, and the child slid off the table.

“We’d better be going downstairs,” she said. “Just in case Dad wakes up and wonders where we are.”

“Will…it must have been someone in your family who owned these things in the trunk.” Caprice took in a deep breath before asking the question she’d been bursting to ask from the moment she’d seen where the brooch came from. “Do you know who she was?”

“Sure!”

“You do?” Caprice hardly dared believe her ears. “So…tell me!”

Will delved to the bottom of the trunk and pulled out a framed photograph. She handed it to Caprice. “This,” she said, “is my grandad and my grandma on their wedding day. It says so on the back.”

Caprice’s gaze flicked from the groom—who strongly resembled Gabe—to the bride. And when she looked at the radiant brunette in the white lace gown, her heart leaped, and she knew she’d come to the end of her search.

The woman in the picture was Angela.

Gabe stood at the open door and watched, unseen, as Caprice moved around the sitting room, tidying magazines, plumping cushions, stooping to pick up a computer game Will had left on the floor by the TV. She’d put the child to bed an hour ago, and ever since, she’d been avoiding him.
